The Art Song Discovery Series
Washington area singers are presented at venues around the community in this series. They are selected via juried competition each spring. The programs are introduced by the Vocal Arts Society Education Coordinator, Elizabeth Daniels.

The Vocal Arts Society invites you to attend one of our Discovery series concerts to explore the world of art song and the vocal recital.

Brooke EversBrooke Evers

 

Ms. Evers teaches at Shepard University and performs with the Washington Bach Consort. She had a leading role in Cimarosa’s Il matrimonio segreto at the University of Maryland. She sang the soprano solo in the Fauré Requiem at the National Cathedral. She received a Fulbright scholarship for study in Vienna. She holds degrees from the University of Maryland and Indiana University.

 

 

Michael GallantMichael Gallant

Mr. Gallant works ... and performs frequently at the Annapolis Opera. He sang Almaviva in The Barber of Seville and Tamino in The Magic Flute for Annapolis. He performed in Cenerentola, Périchole and Falstaff at the University of Michigan. He premiered the role of the Evangelist in a new St. John Passion by Briggs. He holds degrees from the University of Michigan.

 

 

 

 

Joy Schreier

Joy SchreierDescribed by Plácido Domingo as a “wonderful pianist” and hailed as a pianist who “really has it all – fiery technique and a rich, warm tone,” Joy Puckett Schreier made her Carnegie Hall debut at Weill Recital Hall in March 2007 with soprano Danielle Talamantes.  She received her doctorate in accompanying and chamber music in 2003 under Jean Barr at the Eastman School of Music and at Eastman was the recipient of the Barbara Koeng Award for Excellence in Vocal Accompanying as well as a three-time prize winner in the Jessie Kneisel German Lieder Competition.

Dr. Schreier has served as official pianist for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and the Wolf Trap Young Artist Auditions.  She has been presented in recital at the Kennedy Center, the National Museum for Women in the Arts, Center Stage in San Francisco, the Polish Embassy, Anderson House on Embassy Row and Strathmore Hall.  The Washington Post has praised her as an “ideal support” at the piano and she has been credited as “so noteworthy that the room seemed to vibrate from her depth and skill.”

Dr. Schreier has coached grand prize winners in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, the Lotte Lehmann Foundation CyberSing Art Song Performance Competition, and the Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition. She currently serves on the coaching staff of the Washington National Opera Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program.

Other performances this season include the Terrace Theater at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the National Portrait Gallery, the Phillips Collection, the Cosmos Club, the NATS National Convention, as well as recitals with flutist Eugenia Zukerman and founding member of the Canadian Brass, trumpeter Jens Lindemann.

 

R. Timothy McReynolds

timPursuing a career that embraces art song, opera, chamber music, and cabaret, pianist R. Timothy McReynolds is also active as a teacher and vocal coach.  He is the full-time Principal Art Song Coach on the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Music, as well as the Music Director of Towson University’s Music for the Stage.  He has participated as vocal coach/pianist for the Washington National Opera’s Opera Institute and the Aspen Music Festival.  He was Instructor of Piano at American University in Washington, D.C. and Loyola College of Maryland, where he remains as pianist for the Vocal Masterclass Series.  Dr. McReynolds received his B.M. from Indiana University, M.M. from the University of Michigan, and completed his D.M.A. at the University of Maryland.  His teachers have included Edward Auer, Martin Katz, Robert McCoy and Rita Sloan.  He has participated or served as pianist for the masterclasses of John Wustman, Margo Garret, Steven Blier, Brian Zeger, Suzanne Mentzer, Vinson Cole, Vivica Genaux, William Bolcom, John Musto and Richard Hundley.  Dr. McReynolds has toured internationally with Columbia Artists, and has given concerts, cabarets, and masterclasses in Mexico, Germany, and Austria, as well as across the United States.  He also performed in recital with acclaimed bass-baritone, the late William Warfield.  He continues his close association with the Washington (D.C.) Vocal Arts Society and their Discovery Recital Series.  Recent concert venues include the Kennedy Center and Catholic University in Washington, D.C., the Maryland Arts Festival in Baltimore, and the Egyptian Embassy Concert Series in Vienna, Austria.  His recent  schedule includes concerts in Virginia, Ohio, Tennessee, New Mexico, Florida and Arkansas.
