Schubertiade Festival – September 2003

Two recitals that taught the Austro-Germans several things about their own art. Maltman is a new-look lieder singer: strong, direct and slightly cheeky, like an actor from ‘Eastenders’ playing at the RSC. There’s an engaging sharpness of delivery, a clean bite to the text. And sweeping through Schubert’s ‘Die Schöne Müllerin’ with scarcely a pause between one song and the next, he really worked the opportunity this cycle gives for story-telling, brilliantly shaping its rise-and-fall contour of hope, expectation, denial and despair…the heartfelt innocence, the vulnerable bravado, and the vivid vocal colours… The next day it was the same with an exhilarating Schumann ‘Dichterliebe’ and a set of Wolf songs so immediate that you barely noticed that they were songs, they felt more like engagements with real life.

Can't make a recital? Vocal Arts Society does understand. However, we do know of deserving young singers who can be invited to attend. We can also resell seats to the benefit of the Society. We will provide an acknowledgement letter for your donation.

If possible, mail a ticket you cannot use to Vocal Arts Society, 1818 24th St NW Washington DC 20008. You can also cut the ticket in two and fax the pieces to 202-342-0010 up to 12 hours before concert time. Closer to the time, you may call, 202-365-9064, or email wowears@vocalartssociety.org
with your name and seat number.
